This interesting looking vessel is a Japanese water cooling pitcher which is called a yuzamashi or samashi. It is beautifully made and has a lovely glaze.
Asian tea enthusiasts use water cooling pitchers to cool the water before introducing the water to the tea leaves in the teapot. The idea is that the heated water is first poured into the yuzamashi and then from that vessel it is carefully poured into the teapot.
Yuzamashi come in many sizes, different clay bodies and glaze colors. In the spirit of Japanese tea tools, these vessels do not have to match teapots or such and are purchased solely on the individual merit of design and appearance and the usefulness of the piece.
This is a handmade item – slight variations in the painting, colors, tooling, patterning and kiln effects of Chinese and Japanese tea wares are to be expected. We have carefully photographed this item as best as possible – please be aware that different device screens can render colors and subtle tones slightly differently.
