This charming teapot by Gyokko has a classic Tokoname appearance – black with patches of red-orange that seem to float across the surface. This effect, known as yohen, is achieved by placing the vessel in the kiln twice – once in an oxidizing kiln and once in a reducing kiln. These two conditions within the kiln develop the red and the black parts of the teapot. The cylindrical body of this teapot tapers ever so slightly towards the top, complimenting the kiln effects and giving the teapot a beautiful profile. Fine concentric lines circle the body of the teapot adding dimension and giving the teapot a softly textured feel.
This is a handmade item – slight variations in the painting, colors, tooling, patterning and kiln effects of Chinese and Japanese tea wares are to be expected. We have carefully photographed this item as best as possible – please be aware that different device screens can render colors and subtle tones slightly differently.
