This interesting looking mustard yellow pottery vessel is a Japanese water cooling pitcher which is called a yuzamashi.
Asian tea enthusiasts use water cooling pitchers to help cool the water before introducing the water to the tea leaves in the teapot. The idea is that the heated water is first poured into the yuzamashi and then from that vessel it is carefully poured into the teapot.
Yuzamashi come in many sizes and in different clays and glaze colors. In the spirit of Japanese tea tools, these vessels do not have to match teapots or such and are purchased solely on individual merit.
This is a handmade item – slight variations in the painting, colors, tooling, patterning and kiln effects of Chinese and Japanese tea wares are to be expected. We have carefully photographed this item as best as possible – please be aware that different device screens can render colors and subtle tones slightly differently.
